People – The Human Element of Transformation

It is all too easy to forget about the human element of functional transformation. Businesses are sometimes first attracted by the potential to realise cost savings and drive efficiency. In reality, transformation is about delivering effectiveness more than anything else. Of course, we need efficiency and a solid control framework. However, I have always seen them as the means rather than the end in themselves.

With well-designed processes, thoughtful use of data and the right amount of automation, people then have the opportunity to be effective. In addition, without the routine, manual tasks filling up time, people get the space to think about what they are doing, consider how they can make improvements, and do things differently. As a result, people become more creative, not less. When the tools are available, and the environment in which they work supports them, people improve the bottom line.

People-Centric Change Management

People are also why transformation has to go hand-in-hand with well-considered people-centric change management. People will, additionally, have insights into how it works today and already have ideas about how to improve it. Furthermore, they will know the pitfalls of what may not have worked in the past. Ultimately, people will determine whether the transformation is successful or not.
